BEMA Intel Industry Indicators

  • In the fourth quarter of 2025Commercial Aisle Bakery dollar sales for the quarter totaled $23.2 billion, an increase of 0.6compared to the corresponding quarter in 2024. Unit sales were also up 2.3% for the same period. Dollar and unit sales were down significantly for commercial aisle bread, buns & rolls, cakes and cookies, while snack cakes saw an increase in dollar and unit sales. 
  • In the fourth quarter of 2025, In-Store Bakery dollar sales were up 2.3% to $6.3 billion compared to the corresponding quarter a year agowith unit sales up 0.1%. 
  • Importantly, the Grain-Based Foods Stock Index was down 9.2% in the fourth quarter of 2025, while the S&P 500 increased a full 45.3%. Baking ingredient costs are finally on the decline for some categories tracked by Milling & Baking News’ Bakery Ingredient Indexes:  
    • Devils food cake: Down 6.0% (2025Q4 compared to a year ago) 
    • White pan bread: Down 6.1% 
    • Cake donuts: Up 11.3%  

BEMA Intel Member Pulse Survey

  • 33% of equipment manufacturers report 2025Q4 bookings were up, compared to 23% in the third quarter.
  • More than 8 in 10 (84%) equipment manufacturers are positive about their company’s business outlook for the next 6 months, up slightly from 78% 2025Q3.
  • 82% of equipment manufacturers are positive about the industrial/commercial bakery channel outlook in the next 6 months, up from 78% last quarter. Increased raw material costs: 27% (down to 38% in Q3)

Top challenges in 2025Q4: 

  • Trade uncertainties*: 73% (steady from Q3), up from a low of 9% in 2024Q1
  • Unfavorable business climate (e.g., taxes, regulations): 38% (up from to 31% in Q3)
  • Weaker domestic economy and sales: 36% (steady from Q3)
  • Increased raw material costs: 27% (down to 38% in Q3)
